in situ
Refers to treatment or disposal in place, e.g., waste or soil is treated in
place without excavation or without breaking the Earth’s surface.
in-situ leaching
The process of extracting metals or other minerals from ore by allowing an
acid-containing liquid to flow through the ground that contains the
minerals. The minerals are dissolved by the acid (leached) and captured
when the liquid is collected. Leaching is also used to recover minerals
from waste rock that contains too low a concentration of the mineral to be
worth recovering by typical extraction methods.
INCIN
Incineration
Ion Exchange
A reversible process in which soluble ionic contaminants (such as dissolved
metals) are adsorbed on a solid ion exchange media (naturally occurring
materials or polymeric resins containing charged functional groups that
electrostatically attract ions of opposite charge. The media can hold a
finite amount of contaminant and this amount is referred to as the media’s
capacity. When the contaminant capacity of the media is reached, the media
is removed from service and the contaminants are stripped by a regeneration
process. Regeneration restores the capacity of the media so it can be
returned to service.
